BYS 21st to 23rd June 2024 Weekend Regatta - Derwent Reservoir

BYS 21st to 23rd June 2024 Weekend Regatta - Derwent Reservoir

INFO below outdated, this years to be added asap by Steve but it gives you an idea.  Best option is to speak to kids and parents from last year - it was simple when we got there!  Got a bit more confusing after we got to the bar but we didn't care by then - the kids were gone and happy!  :)

This Event is only available to sailors who will be at RYA Youth Stage Two Level by the event.

If you have not completed a medical consent and permissions form for 2024, or if information changes during the year, please use this link to complete:  Medical Consent Form

Water Park privacy Policy

This notice explains how and why we collect information about you, your child, or children you are bringing to Water Park and what we do with it.

Waterpark has to put a cost on this event to cover organisation, transport of boats, equipment, and staff time, as Steve will be working the event.  We will keep this at £50 max per family, reducing the cost if more sailors attend.

£50 max to Water Park, £55 entry fee and £18 Per tent/ £24 motor home/caravan For Friday to Sunday.  Please take the time to read the information below.

Parents are needed to be in attendance for the event, on site, but as for Water Park Club club sessions, you can agree to have shared "loco parentis" with other parents.  This is to ensure that someone can look after the children if there is a problem; illness, injury, cold etc.  Water park staff (Steve) will be there in a supervisory role, mornings and evenings, and coordinating, as well as equipment transportation, but will be Assisting on the sailing during sailing times - see schedule below.

British Youth Sailing Regional Junior Championships

The event that's got something for everyone

The BYS Regional Junior Championships event is a festival for all junior sailors who are learning to sail in club boats, through to racing sailors in Recognised Junior Classes. There are three fleets, Championship Fleet, Coached Regatta Fleet and Rookie Fleet. With the three different fleets there should be something for your level of sailing. Along with prizes for event winners, there will be a range of prizes for sailors exhibiting the British Youth Sailing Values and Behaviours and showing a passion for the sport. There is also the Club Trophy for the club that has the most entries at the event.

Rookie Fleet supported by OnBoard:

Aim:
The Rookie Fleet is for junior sailors aged 8 to 13 on 31st December 2023 who are of RYA Stage 2 ability. The event will look to develop sailors’ confidence and ability though a mixture of coaching and games on and off the water.

Equipment: all Rookie Fleet events allow sailors to enter using a boat provided by the organisers at no extra cost. Some events across the UK allow sailors to bring their own boat, if that is the case you will be provided with the option at the time of booking. If bringing your own boat, please ensure it is insured with valid third-party liability insurance with a minimum cover of £3,000,000 per incident.

We will likely be covered under Water Park insurance.  TBC.

(Water Park Can supply all the following personal equipment):

Sailors will need to bring their own sailing clothing which must include a buoyancy aid and footwear that they do not mind getting wet. We would also strongly recommend a wetsuit and waterproof jacket. If you need to borrow equipment, please speak to your home club in the first instant or contact the event organiser if required.

Tuition: The Rookie Fleet is delivered by qualified RYA Instructors and run to the safety standards of a RYA Recognised Training Centre. This includes one safety boat per six boats on the water.

2-day event. £55 cost if you book early. (Could be Saturday Only at £30 entry fee).

Coached Regatta Fleet:

For sailors who can sail around a triangle course and want to start racing.
This fleet will be run by British Youth Sailing Coaches or the equivalent and will be a brilliant learning experience for sailors who want to improve their racing skills.
Racing in BYS Recognised Classes.
Preparation for Championship Fleet next year.
Prizes for BYS Values and Behaviours as well as results.

FAQs

Can my parent/guardian watch? The Rookie Fleet is usually the group closest to the shore so ideal for spectators.

Can I sail with a friend? Yes - The weekend is all about developing confidence and improving your sailing. If you want to sail with a friend that is completely fine. In fact, some of the games and activities will need you to sail together!

Can I just do one day? Some events allow a Saturday only option which you can choose at booking (if available). No Sunday only option is available. Either way we are convinced after the fun you will have on Saturday you will want to come back on Sunday!

Can my parent/guardian help at the event? We are always in need of extra help, that may be afloat or as part of the shore crew. Anyone who wants to help should contact the Regional Development Officer looking after your event.

When will we have lunch? Sailors and parents will be made aware of the planned time for lunch at the morning briefing so they can arrange to meet back at the clubhouse.

What if it is too windy or not windy enough? Sometimes the weather is not ideal for sailing, if this is the case our team has lots of other activities planned that will keep you having fun and learning. This includes a giant stand up paddleboard which is always a popular choice.

On Arrival:

you will need to sign in at registration at which point you will be provided with event specific information, including the times and locations of any briefings for the sailors and the sailor will be issued with a tally number. All sailors are required to tally on and off when going afloat and coming ashore as part of the events safety protocols. This is a straightforward process, and it will be explained further by your instructors on the day.

Catering & Accommodation: this is not included in the cost of the entry however details of any camping or catering arrangements are in the notice of race for each regional event in the ‘further information’ section at the end.

Schedule: registration will be on Saturday 17th June 0900 to 1000 in the Race Office (usually the main club house). A briefing will take place at 10:30 on Saturday 17th June with an approximate finish time of no later than 17:00. On Sunday 18th June sailors will meet instructors at 10am for a briefing and all on water activity will be completed by 15:00 at the latest. An event prize giving will follow once results from the racing fleets have been finalised.

Support: We are committed to ensuring that all your needs will be met and you know what is expected of you at the event. So, we will take the time to get to know you and any additional support you need to take part. Please share as much or as little as you want, either using the contact details below in ‘further information’ or by making a note on the booking form. Further information: our team of RYA Regional Development Officers are leading on the organisation of the Rookie Fleet at the event.

General Advice for Parents of Children involved in British Youth Sailing:

At British Youth Sailing, a core philosophy of our programme is to nurture sailors who:

 - Have a desire to learn and be process driven

 - Actively embrace challenge

 - Apply effort using new strategies and tactics

 - Explore and be comfortable with failure

We want our sailors to be able to fail smarter so that they learn faster to help them progress through the pathway and optimise their potential every step of the way. As parents, you are central to their support network, and play a key role in shaping the beliefs and mindset of your children. Through our support, we hope we can work together to continue to share and live our messages beyond the days your child spends inside the RYA environment.

You can find more information on this in our Performance Pathway Handbook.

Failure is not a lack of achievement. It is failing to try, to learn and to make the most of the opportunity

Top tips to support your sailors

 Encourage independence

Encourage and allow sailors, appropriate to their age and level of the pathway to take increasing responsibility and ownership over their own campaign. This means giving the sailors the ‘know how’ rather than the ‘know who’, by teaching them the strategies for planning, nutrition, and boat work, as a few examples, by moving through a continuum from ‘parent does, child observes’ through to ‘child does, parent observes’.

Reward effort and persistence

Whatever the outcome may be, emphasise how hard they worked or how they could have worked harder. Using praise that rewards effort and persistence creates a dedication to learning and increases resilience. By rewarding effort, the sailor will begin to understand that effort is the path to mastery.

Allow and celebrate failure

Allowing sailors to make mistakes and fail smarter are learning opportunities, which allows for them to increase their resilience and learn faster from adversity. Giving sailors an opportunity to develop a strategy for handling failure will allow for them to develop and progress and repeatedly respond to failure by exerting more effort instead of simply giving up. Help them see the learning beyond the outcome of the event.

Model growth mindset behaviours and beliefs

Children learn how to behave by imitating others. That means one of the most powerful ways you can help your child develop these attributes is to model them with your own actions and your own beliefs. In particular, studies have shown that one powerful way that parents model a growth mindset in front of their children is through their reaction to failure.

Three questions to always ask:

  • What did you enjoy most today?
  • What have you learnt for next time?
  • What have you tried hardest at that you can be proud of?
